Students Receive $450,000 in Awards, Scholarships and Bursaries

Over $300,000 comes directly from donors in the community

Nanaimo, BC – June 12, 2013 The Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation is pleased to announce that 306 students from Nanaimo & Ladysmith will be receiving 461 scholarships, awards and bursaries totaling $317,000 towards their Post Secondary education. The Foundation distributed 298 of these awards totaling $202,150 at the District Awards Night at the Port Theatre on Tuesday June 11, along with 133 Ministry District/Dogwood Scholarships for $133,000. The remaining 163 awards will be presented to students at ceremonies at their individual schools.

“The Foundation, with the support of our amazing donors, has been helping local students succeed with scholarships, bursaries and awards for over 30 years,” said Erin van Steen, Executive Director, Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation. “We are thrilled this year at the deserving graduates who will have the support they need to become strong members of the community by pursuing their Pose Secondary education.”

The top recipients from Nanaimo who received $3000 or more this year are:

Michael Dong, John Barsby - Gyro Club of Nanaimo – Elmer Bradshaw/Jack Ryan Award ($2,000), Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

Kennedy Baker, Dover Bay - Zonta Scholarship ($1,000), McRae Family Memorial Award ($500), The Silver Award ($500), Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

Hellen Do, Dover Bay, NRGH Auxiliary Bursary ($2,000), Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

Daveki Kahlon, Dover Bay - Kinsmen Club of Nanaimo Tom McCann Memorial Bursary  ($1,000), Nanaimo Computer Industry Bursary ($750), The Ethier/Pearson Bursary ($1,000)

Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

Junhyuck Kim, Wellington - Justin Smith Memorial Scholarship ($2,500), Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

Julie Zhao, Wellington - William & Peggy Mawhinney Memorial Scholarship, ($2,000), Ministry Dogwood/District Authority Scholarship ($1,000)

The funds for all of the awards are completely supported by the service clubs, community organizations and private donors within the Nanaimo-Ladysmith community. Without the generosity of donors may graduating students would not have the opportunity to continue on with their post-secondary education.
